Have you ever had that heart-pounding, stomach-churning feeling that comes with taking a risk? I know I have. I used to be terrified of public speaking. I’m talking knees shaking, palms sweating, heart pounding kind of terrified. But over time, I learned that the only way to conquer my fear was to face it head-on.
It started with a small presentation in front of a few colleague back in high school, I stumbled over my words, lost my place in my notes, and barely made it through without passing out..
But instead of giving up, I decided to take more risks and push myself outside of my comfort zone. I practiced my public speaking skills every chance I got, from volunteering to speak up in the morning line back in high school to making YouTube videos in which I present topics that interest me.
Slowly but surely, my confidence grew. I went from speaking in front of just a handful of people to presenting in front of more than 100 people at conferences and meetings.
And you know what? I started to enjoy it. I love the rush of adrenaline that comes with standing in front of a crowd and sharing my ideas and insights. And the best part is, I know that I’m still learning and growing every time I do it.
So if you’re feeling scared or intimidated by public speaking, remember that you’re not alone. But also remember that the only way to get better is to keep trying, keep practicing, and keep pushing yourself to take risks.
